sea, ocean「海」意味の違い、使い分け

今回の同意語は名詞で、「海」を意味する2つの語、seaとocean についてです。

① sea ： (局地的な) 海

一般的な海を指す単語で、厳密にはある地域の局地的な海の名前に使われます。
部分的に、あるいは完全に囲まれている、陸に近い部分の海を指すことも多く、Sea of Japan (日本海) のようなエリアを指します。

② ocean ： 大洋

ocean は sea よりも広範囲な「大きな海、広い海、海洋」を指し、通常は
太平洋　　the Pacific Ocean
大西洋　　the Atlantic Ocean
北極海　　the Arctic Ocean
南極海　　the Antarctic Ocean
インド洋　the Indian Ocean
の5つの海洋のどれかを指すときに使います。

従って、会話の中で身近な海を指す場合は、ocean ではなく sea を使うのが良いでしょう。

例文：
Fish abound in the ocean.
大海にはたくさんの魚がいます。

You can see the ocean just beyond those trees.
あの木々のすぐ向こうに海が見えます。

My father is always in oceans of trouble.
私の父は、いつもとてつもない量の問題を抱えています。

③ 使い分けの例

｢海を船で渡る｣ という場合：
sail across the sea / sail across the ocean
どちらも可能な表現。
対象となっている海によってどちらかを使う。

｢海水｣ という場合：
sea water / ocean water
どちらでも意味は通じるが、sea water のほうが一般的な言い回し。

｢水深｣ という場合：
the depths of the sea / the depths of the ocean
特定した海の場合はどちらかを選んで表現するが、特定されていなければ、sea と ocean のどちらでも使える。
