relation, relationship, tie「関係」違い、使い分け

今回は普段の会話でときどき出てくる「関係」という意味の同意語、relation, relationship, tie の３語。

何となくその違いをイメージできるように思うのですが、再度復習をして改めてその違いを理解し、正しい使い方や使い分けについて、学習し直しておきましょう。

① relation ：特に公的な関係

「国家、団体」同士の公的な関係について、用いる傾向があります。
（複数形で）
・public relations　 対社会的関係
（「宣伝活動」を表わすこともある）

例文：
He is a distant relation of hers.
彼は彼女と親戚です。

What was the relation between them？
二人の間柄は何ですか？

Is he any relation to you?
あの人はあなたの親戚ですか？

② relationship ：人間同士の関係

傾向として、人間同士の親密な関係について用います。
ただし、
the relationship between mental and physical health
（心と体の健康の関係）
のように人間以外の関係について述べる場合にも使います。

・日米関係　　　the relationship between Japan and the U.S.
・二国間の関係　a relationship between countries

例文：
I have a relationship with him.
私は彼と交流する。

I want to bring back my relationship with you.
あなたとの関係を取り戻したい。

I have a special relationship with my cousin Jim.
いとこのジムとは特別な関係がある。

③ tie ：結び付き

「人や組織の強い結び付き、関係」を表し、普通複数形で用います。
・結びつきの強弱（close、strong、weak）や、
・関係の種類（diplomatic, economical, emotional）
を表わす形容詞とともに用いられる傾向があります。

例文：
India would like to strengthen its economic ties with Japan.
インドは日本との経済関係の強化を望んでいる。

Japan and China normalized diplomatic ties on September 29, 1972.
1972年9月29日に日本と中国は国交を正常化した。
