floor, ground, grounds「床」意味の違い、使い分け

今回は「床、地面」などの意味をもつ単語についてです。
floor, ground, grounds の３つの語。

すでに理解されて正しく使っている語とは思いますが、あらためて意味やニュアンスの違いと使い分けについてまとめてみました。

① floor ： 床

建物の中で、歩くための平面を「床 (floor)」という。

例文：
The toilet was leaking and water was running all over the floor.
トイレが水漏りして、水が床じゅうに流れていましたよ｡

The kitchen is low and cool; while walls. pink brick floor.
キッチンは低いところにあって涼し＜、白壁でピンクのレンガの床です｡

② ground ： 地面

屋外で歩ける平面を「地面 (ground)」という。

例文：
The cabin had burned to the ground.
その小屋は焼け落ちた。

The mist rising from the wet ground was getting heavier.
湿った地面から立ち上るもやが、だんだん濃くなっていった。

③ grounds ： 特定の目的のための場所

特定の目的のための「場所」を表す。
「～場、～地、グラウンド、庭園、芝生、敷地、構内」のような表現の中で使われる語。
但し、the grounds of a building のような用法での ground は、学校や大きな家のような建物周辺の庭や構内を示します。

例文：
Our bus carried us across the grounds of the Bahama University.
バスで、バハマ大学の構内を通りました。

These arc private grounds and you are all trespassing.
ここの敷地は私有地ですから、あなたは不法侵入していますよ。

④ 注意 ：

イギリス英語の場合、
the grounds of a building は、外の敷地を言います。
地に接した階は、the ground floor「1階」となります。

My flat was on the ground floor at the back.
私のアパートは、奧の1階でした。

アメリカ英語の場合は、
外の敷地に接した階　the first floor 　　「1階」
1階の上の階　　　　 the second floor　「2階」
と言います。
