base, basis, foundation「基礎」意味違い、使い分け

今回は名詞「基礎」の同意語です。base, basis, foundation の３つ。
意味の違いや使い方、そして使い分けについて整理しました。

① base ： ものを支える基礎

その字の通り「基礎、土台」という意味です。
あるものの一番下の部分を指しており、それを支えているものを表します。具体的なもの、抽象的なもの双方に使います。

機械の台座　the base of a machine
作戦基地　　a base of operations
基地局　　　a base station

例文：
I grow up at the base of a mountain.
わたしは山のふもとで育った。

I had a strong base in mathematics before I entered high school.

② basis ： 支えや基準となるものを比喩的に表す

主に「基礎」「根拠」「原理」「基準」などの比喩的な意味で使われます。

on a regular basis

on a part-time
のように使われ、定期的／毎日／パートタイムという方法に基づいて　いることを表します。

例文：
My wife exercises on a regular basis.
わたしの妻は定期的に運動しています。

③ foundation ： 大きなもの全体を支える土台

建造物の基礎や地盤など、普通は地下にある部分を指します。
base, basis が個別に何かを支えるものを表わすのに対して、foundation は最も下にあって全体を支えるものを表します。「基礎、基盤、土台」の意味になります。

したがって、中身の詰まった（solid）、堅固な（firm）、不安定な（shaky）などの土台の安定性にかかわる形容詞と結び付くことが多くなります。

例文：
He made the foundation for the world to unify.
彼は天下統一の基礎を作った。

The company is fixing the reinforcement in the foundation.
その会社は基礎を修正し強化している。

I would advise against building a house on a shaky foundation.
私は不安定な土台の上に家を建てないよう忠告します。
