uninterested, disinterested「無関心な」意味の違い、使い分け

「無関心な」という意味の単語には、次の2つがあげられます。
uninterested, disinterested
しかしそれぞれには明らかなニュアンスの違いがあって、その使い分けも明確に異なりますので、正しく理解してきちんと使い分けたいものです。


uninterested : 興味がない

uninterested

全く興味がない状態とか、好き嫌いなどの感情を持たない無関心な様子を表わします。disinterested も uninterested(興味がない)と同じ意味も持ちますが、一般的には使用されません。

当然、disinterested よりも uninterested の方がよく使われるのですが、何かについて興味がないことを伝えたいときは、not interested in を使うことの方が多く、より口語的です。

She is uninterested in movies.She is not interested in movies.
彼女は映画に興味がない。

disinterested : 公平無私な

disinterested

一方に片寄らない公平無私な様子や偏見がないことを表します。
厳密には、「公平な、他の人のことに一切影響を受けない」という意味で使われます。

あえて、「disinterested」を「興味がない」という意味で使用することも可能ですが、uninterested のところで説明したように、一般的に用いられることはほとんどないようです。
