前置詞 in, at, on, with の使い分け

今回は、前置詞 in, at, on, with の使い分けについてです。

「expert」を例として使い、いろいろなケースについて調べました。
つまり、前置詞の使い分けのルールみたいなものがあるのかどうか。

an expert in agriculture
an expert at skiing
an expert on foreign policy
an expert with a gun
　・・などについて。

例のように「expert」の前置詞としては、いろいろなものが使われますが、わたしは特にルールなどを意識せずに、感覚で使っているように思います。

実際のところどうなのか、ネイティブの方に確認した結果では、やはりルールとして意識しては使っていないとのこと。

１．an expert in agriculture

agriculture は広い分野なので in を使います。

例：
expert in health issues
expert in biomedical engineering
expert in Sino-Japanese relations
expert in Chinese history

２．an expert at skiing

skiing は動詞の進行形なので、どうしても at が多いようです。

例：
expert at waltzing
expert at sewing
expert at singing
expert at horseback riding
expert at cooking
expert at avoiding responsibility
expert at public speaking

※動詞でない場合もあり、その場合は名詞の前に the が来ることが多い。

expert at the jitterbug
expert at the waltz
expert at the computer

３．an expert on foreign policy

これは１番に近いが、分野がちょっと狭くなる場合が多い。
ときどき on と in が取り替えられます。

例：
expert on affairs of state
expert on energy reduction
expert on diet
expert on Japanese literature
expert on English grammar

※１番の expert in Sino-Japanese relations の代わりにexpert on Sino-Japanese relations とも言えます。

同じように、expert in energy reduction が言えます。
多分、分野の広さが曖昧であるため。

４．an expert with a gun

with は「あるものを使うことが上手である」の意味。

例：
expert with a sword
expert with a sewing machine
expert with a knife
expert with words
