force, compel「強いる」意味の違い、使い分け

今回は「強いる」という意味の二つの類義語、forcecompel

force は最近聞きなれてきている語で、映画やアニメの世界では「対象物へ影響を与える見えないパワー」というような意味で使われていますが、実際の英単語の意味はどうなのか・・が、今日の課題です。

2つの語のニュアンスの違いと使い分けについて整理してみました。


force : 無理やりさせる

force

強い強制力を用いて何かを無理やりさせることを表す。
権力の行使や物理的な力による強制力を強調します。

例文:
He was forced to resign.
彼は強制的に辞職させられた。

The thief forced the door to the safe open.
泥棒は金庫の扉をこじ開けた。

Government troops have forced the rebels to surrender.
政府軍は反乱軍に降伏を強いた。

I heard that they forced her to open the safe.
彼らは彼女に無理やり金庫を開けさせたのだと聞いた。
 

 

compel : 強要する

compel

forceほどの強制力を伴いませんが、権威や圧力などの力によって物理的または精神的な面で、人に何かすることを強いる場合に用いられます。force よりも意味合いが弱く、物理的な力を伴うことはありません。

実際は be compelled to do ~(~せざるを得ない)という受動態で使われることが多いようです。

compel obedience服従を強いる[強要する]
compel someone to attend the party(人)を無理にパーティーに参加させる
compel one's child to go to school子供を無理やり学校に行かせる

例文:
You need not compel him to drink.
強いて飲ませることはない。

Her honesty compelled her to tell the truth.
正直さが彼女に真実を語らさせた。

That's when the police felt compelled to use force.
警察が武力を行使せざるを得ないと感じた。

The skiers were compelled to stay in the lodge by the blizzard.
スキーヤー達は大吹雪のためロッジに滞在せざるを得なかった。
