① assert ： 断言する

｢(証拠無しに) 断言する、言い張る｣ という意味で、客観的根拠は無いが個人的な確信に基づいて、はっきりこうだと言い張ること。

例文：
She asserted her right to get the money.
俊女はお金を受け取る権利があると主張した。

You should assert yourself by sticking up for yourself.
あなたは自分を弁護することで、自己主張するべきだ。

② claim ： (権利を) 主張する

権利として主張すること。また事実・信念として主張すること。

例文：
Both of them claim this baggage.
両者ともこかの鞄は自分のものである言い張っている。

He claimed the right to terminate the contract.
彼はその契約を終了できる権利を主張しました。

He claimed that the sales representative lied about his product.
彼はその営業担当者が商品に関してうそをついたと主張しました。

③ maintain ： (正しさを) 主張する

反対されたりしても、自分の意見や信念の正しさを強く主張すること。

例文：
I would maintain with my last breath that he is innocent.
私は彼の無罪を最後まで主張する。

He maintains that there is no point in continuing the project.
彼はプロジェクトを続けても意味がないと力説している。

④ insist ： (頑固に) 主張する

maintain と同様に、反対されても主張することを意味するが、何があっても自説を曲げないという、頑固さが強調される言葉です。

例文：
He insisted on meeting his mother.
彼はどうしても母親に会うといって聞かなかった。

She insisted that she should pay for the book
彼女は自分が本の代金を払うと言い張った。
